Articles Tips & Advice for Preventing eye strain

If you're like the millions of people who spend numerous hours every day looking at a computer screen, you've likely experienced some level of eye strain. The Mayo Clinic describes eye strain as a tiredness of the eyes from overuse. This can be a result of long stretches of driving or reading, but one of the primary causes of eye strain is working in front of a computer. In fact, this condition is so common that it has its own name – "computer vision syndrome." In order to protect your eyes from extensive strain, researchers at Northwestern Health Sciences University recommend that you follow these suggestions:

  • Place your screen 20 to 26 inches away from your eyes, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. You should not have to lean your head or neck to see the screen. If you have to, adjust the text size so you don't have to sit so close to the monitor.
  • Take a break every 20 minutes and look at an object in the distance to relax your eye muscles.
  • Blink regularly and keep your eyes moisturized. If you can't relieve your dry eyes naturally, use eye drops.
  • If possible, alternate between computer and non-computer tasks so you aren't looking at the screen for such long periods of time.
  • Reduce glare by adjusting the lighting in the room or the windows.
  • Get your eyes examined by an eye doctor. Your doctor will be able to help you figure out what you need to do to individually protect your eyes. It's possible you need an updated prescription, so be sure to ask questions and talk to your doctor about specific ways you can keep your vision strong at home and at work. With your True Care membership, you will be able to make vision care an affordable priority that will last you well into your career.
